Creating PDF games

David Donachie's picture

When producing PDF games that are intended to be read either on screen, or printed out through something like Lulu, what sort of resolutions do you do artwork in?

For Lulu I'd have thought you wanted high res art, at least 300dpi or more. For reading on screen you want lower res art, to speed display and keep down file sizes.

Those of you who have produced PDF games for both printing and download what do you use for art? Do you make two versions (like IAWA did), one for screen and one for print? if not what resolution did you use for artwork?

Electronic Versions

Gregor Hutton's picture

OK, so at the moment I am polishing off the electronic version of Best Friends so that it is in line with the new printing. Mainly this involves hyperlinking the Index.

What do you feel you like to provide/get from electronic versions of games?

For Best Friends I'll be providing
* A PDF that looks like the book but with some colour.
* A PDF without artwork that is designed for saving ink when printed, it also can be read aloud by Reader.
* Some exclusive Wallpapers.
* Play sheets as separate PDFs.

Umläut CDs, PDFs and a name for the publishing company

Rich Stokes's picture

Guys,

A few things about the upcoming release of Umläut:

I hope to have the print version ready for Dragonmeet. The book will be "standard indie sized" at 5½" x 8¼". I don't know the page count yet. I currently have the rather excellent Mr Vincent Warrican working on artwork. There might be a cover by Eamon O'Donohughe, depending...

The PDF will be available some time before that. I want there to be 3 PDFs: One that's just the layout of the print version, one which is like that but 2 pages side by side for landscape printing and one which is proper A4. It's possible that the A4 version might not be available straight away because that needs some re-working. But the idea is that you get all three and can decide which one (if any) you want to print.

[Dead of Night] How best to make a PDF version?

Andrew Kenrick's picture

So, ever since Dead of Night came out there have been requests for a pdf version of it. But I've long put off the idea for the simple reason that I've no idea how to go about it.

Mainly, this is due to it being an odd size, to say the least. I don't think this will be much of an issue for viewing on screen - you'd just need to set it up to display pages side by side and it'd look fine. But it could cause issues when people come to print their own copies off.

So how best to do it? Do I upload it as is (with errata and bookmarks added in), along with a print version which has the pages as spreads.
