OK, I'll be in Cork at the end of January for WarpCon.
We're going to run an Indie Games Track and I'd like to see a mixture of short games and some longer ones (maybe short games on Saturday and fewer but longer games another day),
Anyway, Cork isn't that expensive to get to and staying at student hostels are cheap and convenient. So is anyone from here going?

Hmm, I like Cork, visited a few years ago

And from Brum it seems to be quit cheap. I shall do some checking.

What a pathetic state of affairs it is when it is a third of the price to fly out to Ireland than it is to get the train to London. £30 seems very reasonable! I too will investigate.

I'm at Conception just after Warpcon (I think it's the weekend after or somesuch) so will have to give it a miss. But between us all we should have a fair chunk of the British and Irish gaming community covered!
Costs

This sounds interesting. I doubt I'll have the money, but just in case of sudden windfalls, how much does it cost to stay at a student hostel?
I too am surprised at how cheap air travel to Ireland is!

Hostels in Cork
Submitted by Gregor Hutton on Thu, 08/11/2007 - 13:01.
Hostels in Cork are about 17.50 Euro a night per person during WarpCon. Which means 3 nights is £36.50.
Flights are ridiculously cheap if you buy them well in advance. Indeed getting to Cork is cheaper than London by a considerable factor for me.

Excellent, well I'll be there and I'm definitely up for running some games.
Yes, flights to Ireland are cheap, but remember you have to book early to get good prices.

With November coming to an end I'd like to come up with something concrete for WarpCon.
I'm all for running some longer (i.e. regular slotted) Indie Games at WarpCon on the Saturday and a smorgasbord of pick-up games on the Sunday. "You ask for it, I run it." That might work best?
For Indie Games on the Saturday, I'm happy to do long games of...
(a) Best Friends,
(b) Spione.
[Yes, they are the lowest prep. for me and are quite different in their own way.]
On the Sunday I'm cool with doing shortish, demo-ish, games of...
a|state,
carry: a game about war,
Cold City,
Contenders,
Dead of Night,
Dogs in the Vineyard,
Dust Devils,
Mob Justice
My Life with Master,
Umläut
...plus any others I can get a demo pack for and learn how to play.
I'll also probably try and knock together a short demo of Cantare, the fantasy game I'm working on...
So, who is also going and wants to be in on the games on Saturday and/or Sunday.
Last year, it was a tough ask to get players for pick-up games, so on the Sunday we may end up playing amongst ourselves, or perhaps not. Being on the schedule on the Saturday should get us players for sure.

Right, having seen Adam at Dragonmeet we should start getting this finalised. I wonder if WarpCon would be interested in a group discussion about getting games published too? I'm kinda stunned that there aren't more/any Irish RPG companies considering the vibrant board games market, LARP community and things like Mithril miniatures back in the day.

I've a theory about the lack of Irish games companies, and the comparatively vibrant Irish con scene. Basically, all the creative energies that normally go into making games went into organising instead. That said, Northern Ireland produced a good few games, so it could just be laziness on our part.
Seminars haven't done well at Warpcon in the past, but I think it'd be worth trying again.

Okay, I've retured from the dead. I'd like to run some Lacuna and some Roach. Possibly some other things.
Not just organising, but a lot of creativity goes into making convention scenarios and larps which are (sometimes) published free online rather than as a commercial venture.

I plan to be at Warpcon. Those who've been before, where'd you recommend to stay close by the venue?

Hostel
Submitted by Gregor Hutton on Wed, 26/12/2007 - 17:21.
I was going to book a dorm room (it's 70 Euro each for 4 nights, for 6 people) at the Cork International Youth Hostel (An Oige) via Hostelworld.com. An Oige is right opposite UCC and is perfect for going to the con.
The other options are any of the B&Bs along Western Road (near UCC), e.g. Blarney Stone, Achill House, Blue Dolphin, Garnish House, etc.
Or a hostel in town.
Would you be interested in sharing a dorm room? Lemme know. I haven't booked it yet and I'm weighing up who we'll have: me, Cat Tobin, maybe Steve Bassett, John Wilson? ...
