Since I also own the pdf download of QMR (brilliant game) I am very eager to see these linked threads. Unfortunately they don't allow me to see the thread. Do I need special permission as it seems to infer or do I just need to join this other forum as well?

Yes, unfortunately you need to be a member of RPG.net to see that forum and its posts. The registration is free and the posts are quite long and worth reading.
I hadn't realised that you had to login myself, as I was being automatically signed in by my computer here.
