Setting Design Challenge: Finished
Submitted by Malcolm Craig on Sat, 30/12/2006 - 12:44.
So, the setting design challenge is now finished. It's far from perfect. hell, I wouldn't even call it an alpha-version of a game setting. However, it does achieve what I set out to do: create a world where revolutions and political action could take place. I'm quite sure that Joe will reel back in horror at what I've done with Contenders and I'm fairly certain that the modifications to the mechanics will actually need some playtesting in order to get them actually working properly.
All the above being said, there is some good stuff in there (well, in my opinion anyway). Maybe not enough to warrant taking the game and its ideas any further, but certainly enough to warrant the time spent on it.
Any feedback will be gratefully received and I'll be sure to let everyone know how it fares in the contest.
Cheers
Malcolm

I'm horrifically excited by this setting!
I want to play an ex-urka with a personal Connection to my Companion and a desire to bring back the monarchy. How cool will that be?
I can't see any immediate mechanical concerns, I assume Endgame has the same triggers.

I'm still working my way through it, but it's fantastic so far! Good work Malcolm!
It's really interesting

It's really interesting seeing the different approaches we both used for writing settings for the same game.
I was very much going for an "instant access" type of thing, where everything I put into the setting could be dropped into play with little or no thought or work on the part of the reader. You seem to have embraced a richer and far more detailed way of doing things.
I guess it's a bit like the difference between a bag of kettle chips and a steak. One's more satisfying, but requires a bit more thought to prepare.
Thanks Joe, that's great to

Thanks Joe, that's great to hear.
And yes, endgame does have the same triggers as it would in Contenders.

Cheers Andrew. I think it

Cheers Andrew. I think it still requires some work to be truly playable. There are a lot of rough edges around the changes to system and so forth. However, it's something I might work on in the future.

Hi Rich.
I'm currently reading through Umlaut and totally agree about the different approaches taken. Umlaut is much more 'playable' in its current form than 'Revolutionaries'. Then again, I've always been one for a lot of detail in settings, so it's probably not surprising that mine turned out to be a whole mass of information thrown at the page!
