[Miniatures] Production and demand for them

In this comment/thread I said that there were sculptors about that would make good looking figures.

I guess I was thinking of Kev White who made the gorgeous Conpulsion Griffon figure.

Shevy, do you have any thoughts on that?

I think, one-off, or interesting items like that might have a small market. I'm less sold that an indie publisher should get into the game of producing miniatures when the rivals in the market do it better and cheaper.

Of course, I'm all ears! Perhaps there are sculptors that would be willing to work in partnership with a Indie Games Publisher on a project.

For instance, I always thought that the Ronnies entry Krasarnomeets could have done something like that, though I'm sure it was written with third-party figures in mind.

Kev's a good sport; also, he runs his own company and sculpts what he likes, and is a fantastic artist. His prices were fair and reasonable, and allowed me to sell the 3-part Conpulsion minis for at or below industry average. He worked from concept art Stu Beal provided, though I should point out that Stu and Kev have worked together a lot in the past, and have a good eye for what each other need.

It was easy, a relatively painless procedure. I might mention, though, that the whole procedure was made much easier because Kev wanted to do it. Artist-types always work better and faster when they like the project. I suspect.

This is in many respects true, but some might argue the same thing about role-playing games. If we didn't do stuff because mainstream publishers have the money to do it cheaper and better, we wouldn't do anything. :) I think it bears investigation, but I also know that the modelling process is expensive, one way or another. I have no idea how much a sculptor would charge to make a prototype model, but I do know that it costs about £70 to have a wax model rendering done on a digital lathe from a 3D rendered model, and that's if you do the toolpaths yourself.

On the other hand there are companies out there that can produce quite sizeable resin busts directly from 3D files at rather reasonable prices. It's not the kind of thing that would sell in droves, granted, but it makes a great talking point for convention tables, one-off sales, auctions, charity events, competition prizes and the like. Let's see if I can dig out some URL's...
