(Yes before you ask 'Rent' is the current replacement for 'Tear' in the rules due to the mispronunciation of the later and the continued unavailability of 'Rift')
In Solipsist Rents measure how much the Solipsist and his reality (and cloud of animacules) have separated from the rest of reality, and thus how close they are to vanishing into their own universe. When total Rents exceed the Solipsist's total limitations off they go :)
At the moment Rents are gained in the following ways
- Whenever a gain of infestation takes you to or past a multiple of 5 points you gain a rent
Such gains happen when you make a change to reality but overshoot, because your obsessions outstrip your limitations, attracting animacules and moving you further off into your own world.
Being unmade by the Shadow doesn't give you Rents directly, but it does reduce your limitations, which has the same effect of hastening your demise in this reality.
Currently that's it, but should it be? My recent instinct has been no, that with only this one way of gaining rents its not going to happen much, and worse its not much of a representation of what's meant to be going on.
My first suggestion was that you should also gain a Rent when you *fail* a change, because you are suddenly faced with the disconnect between your version of reality and everyone else's, which is a shocking thing, but those I've mentioned the idea too don't like it that much. What do you think? Should there be a threshold for gaining a Rent on a fail? Perhaps by every 5 points you fail by (for symmetry with the existing rule)?
When else? Should you gain a Rent when an Obsession rises? (Probably not, it will happen too much). Maybe you should get one every time the GM feels you have *achieved* an obsession in play?
Suggestions welcomed!

...where are the rules as a whole? I'd like to read them to understand this bit.

Ahhh sorry, I should put a link in my signature or something. You can download a PDF of the Intro and rules (pre the recent playtests and comments) here

An idea

An idea just occurred ....
How about I let the players buy themselves Infestation with Rents? It would allow players to recharge infestation when desperatly needed. Something like
gain 1 rent and raise infestation to the next multiple of 5
If there was some way of going into infestation debt as well then it would allow the player to push a change when they didn't have the infestation for it, which would remove some of the deterministic feel to the resolution mechanics as well ...

Yes, do allow a buy-in

Yes, do allow a buy-in option. I think it's tempting to hit the magic Zero, and getting extra infestation when needed is a handy thing.
What about infestation

What about infestation debt?
The rule above allows you to consciously attract animacules and gain a rent, but not when actually making a change. Should I allow some other, possibly even steeper rate, to grab infestation during a change in return for instant rents?
In a way it makes less sense, because rents measure how far you are pulling off towards your own reality, and a perfect change means you are balancing consensus reality and your own, rather than going off your own way. Its kind of like saying you'll go and get a perfect result to avoid getting a rent ... by getting a rent :)
Of course if you are going to *fail* the change then its a different dynamic.
Managed to do any playtesting yet Carl?

I'm lobbying to get players at my local FLGS. Unfortunately, my go-to gamer group are a superstitious, cowardly lot. The other group that isn't is very busy.
I'll do what I can.
I'm in no way expecting it

I'm in no way expecting it of you, and I've failed to do another playtest myself yet due to timing difficulties, I'm just anxious to see *someone* playtest it :)
