[Mob Justice] GTA Chicago

Iain McAllister's picture

I have been thinking a lot about MJ lately and how to run games for it. I had this old idea that has been bouncing around in my head for a while and thought I would get some feedback from you guys.

The idea would be that the players would all be recent illegal immigrants, maybe even related. Short on cash and with various people to support, they would find the underworld can be a most lucrative line of work. I would write up the various factions with their own politics involved, and also ratings, related to stature, that would keep me informed how the various factions thought of the PC's. It would hopefully get to the point where the PC's where powerful enough to takeover, or start a faction.

This would also come into play in the networks rules, that factions that didn't like them would be the ones attacking them.

Each session would be comprised of one or more missions, that the PCs had created themselves or they picked up through contacts, getting to certain stature/ reputation levels etc. basically follwoing a GTA style structure.

Thoughts, comments appreciated.

Cheers

I think you have hit a key thing here...

Hi Iain

Yes, you have hit the nail on the head here. I think the REALLY strong thing that Mob Justice has mechanically is the ability to get a party together. You all have Loyalties, right? And Codes and Tells. These are what band the group together, and you can do it from the very start.

No need for any arcane or tricksy plotting, railroading or throwing people together.

Simply get everyone to have a reason to be embroiled with each other.

And the decisions they make in game? Well, they're going to rock on toast now that they have these inter-related connections and codes.

Out of the box you have a group who cares about each other and have hot buttons to press on each other all over the shop.

No lone wolves, right? Everyone has a loyalty, and codes. These are not separate characters, they're a band of brother and sisters.

I think your idea is spot on. It doesn't have to be limited to gangs, but as an easy buy-in pack for newbies it's great and intuitive. GTA has done the legwork establishing this thing in the gamer consciousness.

I was delighted to see that Leisure Games ordered 8 Mob Justices today, so anyone in London should be able to pick it up from Finchley!

Come lovely man ordered one

Come lovely man ordered one from Spain as well, so I think I will need to read up on Spanish gangsters and see if I can't come up with something involving them.

I am going to do some work on this idea and see about writing up a city pack kind of thing, with lots of connections, things going on etc. that a new GM can use to kick his campaign off the ground.

I will post more here as I work on it.

Cheers
