My status as a SpamBot

Geoff Hall's picture

Okay, this is getting silly now. EVERY message that I try to post is getting flagged up as spam and having to be allowed through by the forum mods before it can be posted. There has to be some kind of functionality in your spam filter to set user names as not being spambots so that this doesn't happen because, to be honest, what was initially a minor frustration is now quickly killing the usability of this forum for me.

Hi Geoff

I set you to member status, which should be bypassing the filter, but doesn't appear to be. I'll tweak a few other settings and see what I can do.

I understand it's a pain, but to give context, the 100 spam bookpages in a day weren't fun either.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that you switch off the filter or anything similar, that would be crazy! It's just bloody frustrating to try and participate in discussions and have all of your messages bounced :o/

Exception list

Gregor Hutton's picture

I think names can be added to an exception list, so that might work. I noticed something about that in the Akismet admin panel.

But the permissions all reside with the wise and powerful Oz Matt.

Hmm.

Annoyingly there's no direct whitelist, as it uses an external source (Akismet).

I've turned off the auto-IP detection, to see if that helps.

Crazy idea...

Geoff,

Try creating a new account and posting from that.

If that works, Matt can probably re-name the new account. Not ideal, but it might make the site more useful to you.

Geoff, are you posting about

Geoff, are you posting about things like penis extensions? That can set off the detectors.

Well...

I was postulating the use of dick size (with the use of viagra to give a temporary bonus) as a method of conflict resolution. Do you think that might have affected things?

So, I've come back from Conceptions kinda fired up and started working on Anarchy again, which is all cool. And, as such, I've started poking around here again after something of an absence. I've now remembered one of the main reasons I ceased getting involved here (quite apart from my usual feeling of being unable to usefully contribute to most threads); I am, apparently, a filthy, loathsome spammer. Still. It hasn't happened every time I try to post yet but it has happened a couple of times (and, indeed, my last post still hasn't been published nearly a day after I tried posting it.) I'm going to keep an eye on the phenomenon but if it keeps up I'll probably end up getting frustrated and buggering off again.

Maybe Rich's suggestion about creating an alternate account and then renaming it will work, what do you think Matt?

Nah,

Matt's picture

It's not username based. The heuristics match IP address, post content and a few other things. A new username wouldn't change those.

Anyway, we've not had much spam of late (since the upgrade), so I've temporarily disabled Akismet. We'll see how it goes....

Fair enough

In which case I shall see about sticking my oar in. Mind you, if spam levels rise do turn it back on!

I know how you feel, the same thing happened to me, turned out that it was caused by having a URL tag in my signature. I replaced that with a plain URL and the spam flagging stopped.

Really?

That's interesting, if Matt turns Akismet back on and it starts happening again I'll try that one out. Thanks for the tip!
