E-zine: getting things moving.

Iain McAllister's picture

Right, we keep talking and talking about doing an e-zine but I really want to get one together just to see if it will work. Here is my proposal.

I want the e-zine to be part informative, what is coming out, con news etc., and part educational, game design, how to start your own company etc.

So here is what I would like to see in issue one. I will coordinate people to do this, set deadlines etc. if people are willing to give me that control. If not, speak.

Gencon review - was hoping you might whip this up Gregor?

Game Design article - maybe first in a series, game design 101. I would like an emphasis on practical advice on how to design mechanics, playtesting etc. I dont want endless articles debating whether GNS is good or not.

Free game - we talked about this as an idea at one point, could be an opportunity to ashcan things in early development.

Interview - maybe with Fred Hicks if we can get it and tie the issue towards Dragonmeet? We would no doubt be able to get Angus to give us something as well, maybe an article about the difficulties of con organisation, dos and donts etc.

Adverts - obviously, one for each of the memebers of the collective at the very least.

Theory article - of some description, again with a practical bent i.e. to what use can you put the power 19.

Sneak peak - of something forthcoming.

Well those are my ideas anyway.

I would really like to get this going by the end of the week so would appreciate your feedback swiftly.

I would also like people to raise their hands for articles, suggestions welcome. I will happily write a game design article.

Cheers

Iain

Hi Iain I've got a bunch of

Hi Iain

I've got a bunch of theory and game design articles I'd be happy to contribute. I've also got one examining the role of the GM.

I could add Munchmausen Tales (my first Ronny entry)to the ezine as a free game. It's complete and very short.

I can also do a preview article on The Dragon vs The Gun or Labyrinths and Lycanthropes.

I seem to remember Per volunteering as editor before, are you two going to split the responsibilities or what?

I believe Per as put forward

Iain McAllister's picture

I believe Per as put forward as editor but I thought I should get things moving as it just seemed to have stalled. I think we should only have one editor really to coordinate things but hopefully everyone will pitch in. If people want someone else that is fine by me, I just really want to get this off the ground.

Tim intended audience, and this is personal view only, would be gamers who haven't come across indie gaming that much yet and maybe need persuaded. Also those who are interested in writing games and starting their own imprint.

Does that seem ok?

I've been mulling over the

Per Fischer's picture

I've been mulling over the zine for some time - one of the stalling reasons were the fact that we did not exactly agree upon what the zine was going to be and who it was for. And I've been on holiday ;)

I don't believe in "We got to have a zine because we've got to...have...a...zine" kinda arguments, and we were just beginning to move past that stage (maybe I'm wrong, no big deal, and it wouldn't be the first time :)

IMO there are two major ways of approaching this: doing as you do right here, Iain, take action and make something happen right here, right now. Or taking the longer road of discussing why there's going to be a zine, who is goig to read it, formats and so on.

I think both ways are OK, both can work, but personally I prefer the latter.

Audience

Gregor Hutton's picture

Personally speaking I feel the audience should be people like ourselves (and of course our actual selves too).

We should write for gamers in the same situation as we are, and that have the same mind set that we do.

I think this would make it most useful as we would be writing about what we know from experience, and that would be most directly useful to the audience.

I anticipate it would help those seeking to form similar collectives as our own.

Of course, that's just my own feelings on it and I haven't mulled it over for any length of time.

I'm pretty disinterested in "converting" people to gaming or arguing for people to follow this way of doing things. I am far more inclined to show how this works for me and my goals, and how I am happy to help and share information for others to make it work for them too.

I wasn't planning on

Iain McAllister's picture

I wasn't planning on conversion as such, perhaps I came across too evangelical for a moment. More along Gregor's route which is just showing what we do and why we do it. If the zine is friendly in nature you will get converts anyway I think.

I can see both routes there Per I just really think we should get something together. It is something we all want to do it is just a matter of settling on what exactly we want in it. I think if we go back into talking about it, too much, we will just end up going round and round with no actual result.

Does everyone else agree?

I am going to spin off another thread about the content and tone of the zine now I have people's attention, in the hopes that we can nail something down by the end of next week.

Cheers

Reason I asked was that

Tim Gray's picture

Reason I asked was that target audience will dictate most other things about it: content, style, distribution, price (or lack of), etc.

I think you need to be a bit careful about "that have the same mind set that we do"... but I guess you mean something like, "all those folks who hang out on the Forge or Story Games or are happy to buy the stuff from IPR or get into certain kinds of discussion on RPGnet etc".

...is exactly what I had in mind. That's just my opinion of course! (And I'm sure that we don't need to all agree on the same opinion on any one thing by the way.)

I personally feel that preaching or whatever is not something that I'm interested in. Or even trying to convince people of doing things this way over any other. Look, we do what we do and this works for us, but maybe that doesn't. Take it or leave it. No one made us Gods to tell anyone else the right or wrong way to do something.

I'd like to read an e-zine that appeals to my interests and covers things that I'm directly interested in.

And my statement says nothing about the types of games or styles of play or whatever. I'd be happy to see columns and articles on things that I'm less familiar with than some of the other folks on here.

Oh, as for GenCon reviews... I still haven't done mine for 2005 or 2006, so I wouldn't wait on a 2007 review from me. Maybe Malc will have something to say on it?

Right I think we have

Iain McAllister's picture

Right I think we have decided on our audience then, so I am going to spin off a new thread about content.
