So I am toying with a project that has been knocking around in my head for some time called 'Whodunnit'. basically it is cluedo with knobs on where you can play the murderer and get away with it. Currently imagined as a board/ story game though not too sure yet.
What I am having trouble with is picturing the mechanics, especially the social side of it. Basically I need something where people can bluff, lie, infer truths etc. from a mechanical as well as a story telling perspective. The only mechanic that sprung to mind instantly was poker, as it can involve bluff etc.
Does anyone know of any other systems I can look at that handle social interactions really well?
Cheers
Iain

Oh, look, this is completely fine with me.
I worked out, while thinking about my murder game, that it could work two ways: either it could be a game about discovering secrets or a game about playing the murderer and getting away with it.
I went for the first, so if you want to do a game that works the second way, go for it. We could even publish them together or something: or at the very least use each game to plug the other.
Here's the latest version of my rules, by the way. Much more solid than before.
Iain, for bluffing mechanics, look at Perudo.
For general social mechanics, there's the Mafia game, also known as Werewolf. It's not hard to figure out that you could do a whole murder game by tweaking these rules.

Yeah I am thinking about Liar's Dice, which Perudo seems to be, as a mechanic. The Mafia game is a good one as well, interesting idea. I am not sure about the new rules for your game by the way but I will read them again in the light of what you have said about it being about secrets.
The game I want to make is basically Cluedo with knobs on.

How about Burning Wheel,

How about Burning Wheel, which has the Duel of Wits to handle social conflict? It's basically a mechanic to decide the outcome of social interaction above and beyond the roleplaying.
