[Collective Endeavour] Literature on our games

Gregor Hutton's picture

Over on this topic Tim asks a very good question about booth literature.

"Might be worth thinking of some low-level involvement possibility to go alongside frontline booth babes like yourselves. Such as having some blurb that summarises all the Colective members' games that people can take away, but not all those games are featured on the stand."

I think this is an excellent point, and having seen the excellent work that Fred Hicks is doing in the US for GenCon 07 we should aim to do something similar.

My initial feeling is that periodically we would start up a thread asking for people to submit their blurbs, images, prices and so on to a central coordinator. I feel that this coordinator is simply some good soul who has decided to take the task on at any given point in time.

We would then create the literature to everyone's satisfaction and then print copies in time for an upcoming con. We would then have feedback on how many leftovers we had to better tailor the next menu at the next con.

Where many cons are in close proximity we would just stick with one flyer throughout that "season".

Dragonmeet is a long time away and a Dragonmeet flyer (for the goodie bags?) can be done nearer then. More pressing are late summer cons like Rope-Con, GenCon Indy and GenCon UK. I would be happy to take flyers to GenCon and Finland for example.

So, is this a good idea? And, if so, do I have any volunteers to produce a flyer before the end of July?

Another sensible idea. Would

Another sensible idea.

Would it be wise to create a simple InDesign or QuarkExpress template that we could use to put this information in? This would keep the look of such an item consistent and save both time and effort in the future.

That's excellent. I'm sure

That's excellent. I'm sure Paul would make a grand job of doing a visually attractive and readable booth menu for us.

Great stuff.

Excellent

So we have a volunteer to do the layout. Thanks Paul, that's fantastic.

Would anyone be interested in starting a thread specifically for a flyer and collating the information?

And if anyone else wants to help with the look that would be much appreciated as well. (Perhaps making use of Jon Hodgson's ideas for the zine or something?)

Anyway, I'm thinking that we list the games, prices, URLs, company name and website on it for each publisher. As well as our mission statement and site URL.

I'd like to see it not limited to published games, but also to include forthcoming games that are currently nearing completion (say "in development" with a link to a website about it). But that's a personal opinion.

So, in effect, I'm saying: do you consider yourself a member? And, if so, what games are you currently publishing/working on?

New thread regarding the

New thread regarding the booth flyer started here.

As regards games from outwith the collective being demoed, I have no problem with talking about other games but I think that our valuable demo time should concentrate on our own games, the games which are the core reason for our existence (in terms of a booth presence). This is not to say that I wouldn't like to demo, say, Grey Ranks, but I'm not sure if that would cause a dilution of our stated aims.

Just to bring us back to the

Just to bring us back to the literature thing and away from the flyer, pretty much the last thing we discussed (in the car park on the sunday) was getting some flashy postcards and business cards printed up, with our mission statement on the back.

This would be a good thing to have on the stall as well as the menu, and we could pop one inside every purchase as a bookmark/reminder who we are!

I think Matt suggested a good place to get this done but I've forgotten where it was.

Each entry also needs to have one or two sentences summarising what the game is. Otherwise the enterprise has little point - I see it as more about making people say, "Hey, that might be interesting, better check it out." (And also, I suppose, acting as a nice data sheet for stuff they might have seen on the stall.)

I'd say one sentence of 25 words or less.

I guess we want the same

Andrew Kenrick's picture

I guess we want the same sort of blurb we deliver in person, that single catchy hook we reel them in with.
