Roy of the Rovers!

Gregor Hutton's picture

At the weekend my dear mother had piled up some old issues of Roy of the Rovers from 1980/1981. She asked me what I wanted to do with them... I, of course, put them in my bag and have taken them back to Edinburgh.

These are exactly what I was going to trawl through old cupboards for, but she has done all the hard work for me. I shall put them to good use for inspiration on Up Go The Heads story ideas and art reference. There are a variety of styles in the comic as well as action photos of early 1980s football heroes in dynamic poses (and cheesy photos too).

Great news.

Here's the first 9 pages...

Up Go The Heads (816 kb)

I just have the "end games" to write in and an example of play, really. The rules pretty much haven't changed from the 24-hour version (though I'll clarify ties and Risked dice that end up tied = basically get the dice back with no loss or gain).

Looks very nice, love the artwork.

Spotted a typo on pg 5, the second EGO should be HUBRIS.

Rangers merely a regional team? I fear for your safety...

Thanks for the spot!

Just a few pages to go and I'll have something to playtest. I'd love to get the rights to the art and use it "for real". I'm following up on that at the moment to see how much it would cost ... but that would depend on it being worth publishing for money, etc. (see how someone bought the rights to Roy of the Rovers for £150)

I would like to see it as a part of a "sports pack" ... maybe something to ask Per with his racing game?

Oh and Rangers...

...are in good company with Villa and Schalke. I will say that I see Celtic as in the same bracket. Partick Thistle are a 'romantic' team of course, as are Queen's Park (amateurs! that's a setting!). I class the Major International teams as ones who win multiple European trophies and spend many millions on each player.

Nice work. I have the same

Nice work.

I have the same feeling about this as Contenders. Not at all interested in the surface subject matter, but will probably have a great time when actually playing it.

Another game to playtest on my travels around the world!

Sports Pack?

Why not :)

BTW, there was a comic series I read as a kid about a prison football team - crazy, slapstick stuff.

It had its own crazy Danish title of course, but I managed through intensive research to find its origins. The series was called Lag's Eleven and was actually published in the UK in Scorcher, where Rovers also lived in the early 70s. Apparentky nobody knows who created Lag's Eleven - shame, I remember it as well crafted.
