[Spiel Essen 07] Anyone going?

Andrew Kenrick's picture

I saw this thread over at the Forge (and Matt's reply to it) about Spiel Essen in Germany, which is a monstrously big toy fair/games convention.

What do we think to having a CE presence there? Matt, I see you're going again - what do you think? Is it worth it? Would it be feasible if only a couple of us went?

Unfortunately, despite stirring things up with this thread, I'm committed to be at my local convention, Furnace, that weekend, otherwise I'd be there!

I'll be on my world tour at

I'll be on my world tour at that point, so won't be able to make it in person. However, I would, of course, be more than willing to support financially any Endeavour efforts undertaken at Spiel.

Perhaps some sort of Project Odysee/IPR/Forge/Collective Endeavour tie-up could be on the cards?

I have every intention of

Iain McAllister's picture

I have every intention of going to Essen this year and would happily wear my CE cap to represent us.

Any other takers.

The more of us there are the cheaper we can make accomodations and the like.

Yes, I plan to go again this

Matt's picture

Yes, I plan to go again this year. I may be combining my trip with other activities, but that's not quite decided yet.

Last year I sold 30 Covenant (though some were at retail discount to other booth members). It's a fun four days (especially if you like boardgames).

By all accounts the Etap hotel near the convention centre is good value.

Just a heads up: The Forge

Matt's picture

Just a heads up:

The Forge Booth won't be happening, due to lots of German folks not being able to make it:

Frank T said elsewhere:

So, I am sorry to announce that the Forge Booth Essen 07 is not going to happen. Thank you anyway for your commitment and trust. Thanks especially to Eero, whose enthusiasm and competence remain unmatched.

That's not to say I won't go or that something else can't be arranged, just that the Project Odysee co-booth seems out.

Ah, well, I wouldn't have

Malcolm Craig's picture

Ah, well, I wouldn't have been able to attend, but that's a shame, as it seemed to go well last year.

Does anyone feel there is a potential for a CE tie up with one of the German organisations (taking Projekt Odysee as an example)?

Matt: would you be able to give us an idea of how much the entire thing cost you last year? Booth buy-in, airfares, accom and so forth?

Sure. Booth buyin was 50

Matt's picture

Sure.

Booth buyin was 50 quid.

Air fair (with combined train ticket) was about 120 quid. I flew into Cologne and then on, so depending on your local carriers, it might be easier to fly direct.

Hotel 270 quid (This was extreme though, as I booked late on and went for the same hotel as some other folks were at, the previous year it was cheaper and there are some cheaper places clsoe to the venue by all accounts).

For a return of 30 copies sold, plus a further 6 in followup orders from Eero in Finland. Plus the added benefit of promotion, networking and meeting a few folks who I'd only ever interacted with online.

Cheap cheap cheap!

The cheapest way to Essen for me is to fly RyanAir to Düsseldorf (Weeze) airport [it's halfway between Düsseldorf in Germany and Arnhem in the Netherlands], and that airport is not too far from Essen itself (it seems closer than Düsseldorf or Cologne-Bonn). And the bus from Weeze airport to Essen is about €12 one-way and is quite pleasant.

I've done that trip a few times (for me, it's Prestwick to Weeze) as I often stay in Essen for my Germany trips. Booking ahead the flights can be very cheap.

The train system in NRW (NordRheinWestfalen) is so good that you can happily stay anywhere in the area to get to Essen. So Duisburg, Muhlheim, Gelsenkirchen, Essen, Bochum, Bottrop, usw. (even Düsseldorf) are viable places to stay.

I thinking about going... it's a possibility. There's also the chance we could crash with my compadre Robert who stays about 1 km from Essen HbF.

Looks like I wont be able to

Looks like I wont be able to make Essen after all due to holiday clashes. I am going to try and make furnace instead though.
