[Illegal Downloads] Must be a sign of popularity...

Malcolm Craig's picture

So, whilst doing some random Google browsing, I found this:

a site offering free downloads of Cold City.

Ho hum. I suppose it indicates that some thinks it is worthwhile enough to pirate the thing, but it's still slightly annoying. I wonder if these people realse that small press pubishers are not big, faceless corporations but one or two guys creating stuff in a back room somewhere. We're not selling for the fame and wealth, but to cover costs and produce more stuff.

I suppose a polite email to the site owners will be in order.

Cheers
Malcolm

I updated your link so it

I updated your link so it doesn't give the site search ranking. Best not to encourage 'em. Oh, and if you click it watch out for their annoying browser highjack ads.

Anyway, it's a pain, but something you have to deal with in the digital economy.

There was a good thread at

There was a good thread at the Forge a few months back about a similar thing happening to Panty Explosion. Some really good suggestions as to how to turn it into positive marketing were made - I'll try to find a link.

Here it is!

I recall someone else

I recall someone else highlighting that site quite a while ago. I doubt your polite email will make much impression on them :( Bit beyond the pale adding the Robin Laws quote to plug it.

It's a pain , yes, and not much I can do about it. Registrations for the site are closed, otherwise I'd registers and say something like:

"Well, if you liked the PDF, why not consider buying the hardcopy from...."

Oh well.
