Howdo all
I'm currently in the process of finishing off a couple of games/scenarios that I've been working on to publish myself. At the moment I have vague ideas of how I want to proceed, but would be interested in hearing from members of the Collective how they got started in publishing their own games.

I am literally getting started at the moment so would be happy to share anything I learn with you as I go. At the moment I am learning about trademarks, copyright and all the jazz as well as writing a business plan to get funding from my local small business gateway.
Before you publish I would encourage you to give the game to a playtest group you don't know, just to make sure that the rules go as well as you think they do.
Reel Adventures is just about ready for this kind of playetesting, so I am starting to think about clarity of writing and artwork that sort of thing. As I get closer to publishing I will be happy to help you along as well.

How?

Roughly, like this:
I got a website and started putting game ideas online and asking folks to link to them.
I got some good feedback by email and on forums. Folk I didn't know played the games. More importantly, they liked them.
I helped out other people (with web stuff, reviews or editing). Made a few contacts. Got a bit known.
I contributed to an anthology project. It was well received.
I decided it was about time I self published something, and did.
That pretty much sums it up.
It probably helps to mention that parallel to this my real jobs were "web guru", "freelance writer" and "editor", so I acquired skills from that to help me on my merry way.

Back in the day...

...I got started hand-writing games and photocopying them. Then I started using a typewriter and Letraset, all with groups at school or the local gaming club.
Then I was involved in a book going into distro with a large print run. It wasn't a great experience, for me. The game creation side was far more enjoyable.
After that I self published things as PDFs on the web, and I recommend that to everyone as a great place to start.
Thanks for all the feedback

Its really appreciated and useful.
I'm susposably in heads down mode finishing off two books, one an adventure for MRQ taking advantage of their OGL (cos I'm a massive RQ nut!) and a full stand alone game based on Monkey:Journey to the West.
Progress is being hampered by the iminate arrival of my first born, but I aim to have both available to buy by Furnace (www.rpgfurnace.com) in October.
No website as yet, but I have an LJ where interested people can keep upto date with what I am doing.
