[FYI] What is the Collective? What are your plans?

So, given that we've been musing about what membership means, and when we will open up membership to others I've put together a list of links that is intended to contain useful reading.

A lot of key points about the Collective Endeavour have come up on threads about UK Games Expo, particularly in this thread and then this one.

The key ones you should read are "What are the buy-in and other requirements for being a part of the CE?", and the response to that.

And it is probably also useful to read the one where I talk about some Aims, for me anyway, for June 2007.

An attitude that won't fly, for me, is "the whole point of my considering joining the Endeavour was to obtain some kind of convention presence," to which my answer is "I, personally, am not interested in just splitting costs and sharing a booth on a purely financial basis/motivation." Andrew has a more diplomatic answer.

Andrew has also written a clarifying document that should be up on the site soon.

I think, in short, that in order to be a part of this collective, you need to truly be a part of it. There are people on the forums developing games and engaging in discussions that are not on our con table, yet. I sincerely hope that those people will benefit from being involved in the site and want to be a formal part of the collective come June. (In fact, if they are not then I will feel that the mission has failed.)

I then think we head into the second half of the year with a wave of new members and see how that goes into Dragonmeet. I certainly don't see any way people can just "buy into" membership, or neglect their collective responsibilities somehow.

So, if people are interested in being involved later in the year then there is no better time to start dropping in and contributing than now.

Mission

And Matt, being a wizard and all-powerful, has put the official stuff on the top of the site as "Mission.

Agreed

This, plus the new 'mission' section is, I think, an excellent summation of what we are all about. For me, the key to the whole thing is the 'collective' part of 'Collective Endeavour'. It's all about working together, helping each other and becoming a community where people can talk about design, play and publishing in a friendly, informative, knowledgable atmosphere.

Gregor hits it right on the money: splitting booth costs is not the name of the game here. Fostering a spirit of mutualism, respect and assistance is, to me (and I think everyone else involved) what we are about.

Good job in putting together all those links and elucidating very clearly on the matter, Gregor. Also thanks to Andy for writing up the 'mission' article' and to Matt for being webmeister-in-chief.

Cheers
Malc
