Furnace 2007

Andrew Kenrick's picture

I've seen this posted elsewhere, but perhaps Graham doesn't know about our little endeavour, so I'll post it here too.

I went to Furnace last year and it was a really good convention. There were a lot of indie games running (and I only provided 2 in the form of Dead of Night and Burning Empires) - Burning Wheel, Burning Empires and a lot of Heroquest to name but a few. In fact, in any given slot the small-press and indie games outnumbered the sole DnD game!

Anyway, I'll certainly be there this year - anyone else fancy joining me?

Furnace is a tabletop roleplaying game convention in Sheffield UK, taking place on the weekend of 21st-22nd October 2007 at The Garrison Hotel.

There will be space for 50+ delegates and you are most welcome to join us for a convivial weekend of roleplay gaming amongst the seven hills of Sheffield. Set in a former army gaol, 4 of the gaming tables are set in the cells of miscreants and scallywags. Where better to game!

Information will become available over the coming weeks on this website as we gear up for a fun weekend of roleplaying games. Please use the forum at the Tavern to chat about the convention; the games you want to bring and play and anything else that strikes you. The Tavern’s First Age (me), Newt, Darran and Guvnor are bringing this new event to you and we are happy to help with any of your questions.

Look forward to meeting you at Furnace 2007!

Well it's within easy (30 minutes) driving from my house so you're more than welcome to crash at mine. I just commuted last time!

Geoff Hall's picture

That's good to know at least. I assume it's not likely to get booked up uber-quickly or anything? If not I'll leave the decision making until somewhat closer to the time!

I'm not sure to be honest -

I'm not sure to be honest - the organisers have thrown me by organising it so far in advance! Last year the booking didn't go up til september or so and I got my tickets then. I don't intend to rush to get mine just yet.

Howdo Folks

As Games Tzar of Furnace, I would like to extend a warm invitation to The Collective Endeavour to attend Furnace.

Last year we had an attendance of about 40, and this year we are pushing for about 50+

Its a small but very active con, dedicated purely to roleplaying. The attendees are very open minded, friendly and willing to give anything a go.

We did have some miniatures war gamers (The Glory Geeks) turn up last year, but they didn't get the numbers they wanted because everyone was rpging. So they are not coming again this year.

Their loss your gain, since I've already offered Andy the double table (might have been triple) that they used for your purposes.

I'm a big fan of indy gaming as is most of the committee (last year we almost made it exclusively indy). I've run far too much HeroQuest over the last 7 years(so much so I'm taking a break) and I'm currently in love with Burning Wheel/Burning Empires. I've just bought Cold City and I'm waiting on Mob Justice. In fact I've got my own games in development (but I'll witter on about that else where).

Last year tickets were on sale around March (Andy merely gave into me pestering him to buy in Sept) and people trickle in. I'll pop up again on this thread shouting "Warning, Warning Danger Will Robinson!!!" when places are running out.

Anything else you would like to know just ask.

Regards

Thanks Newt!

Sadly the 18th-21st of October will also be Spiel in Essen, which I've been at the last two years. So there might be a bit of tug of war there over which to go to...

Thanks Newt - good to see

Thanks Newt - good to see you here too and can't wait to hear about your own game!

I can't say too much how impressed I was by Furnace - it was very professionally run and great fun, which is very impressive considering it was their first outing!

And the location has to be seen to be believed - it's in Hillsborough Barracks, which is this 19th century garrison turned wholesale into a hotel and some shops. Some of the rooms used for gaming are the old cells. Let me repeat that - you game in the cells. It's awesome, and very atmospheric.

Anyway, enough with the gushing!

Matt - no reason the Collective Endeavour can't be two places at once in a weekend ;-)

Here's the website,

Here's the website, www.rpgfurnace.com, which has all you need to know (if it doesn't just shout)

Looks like a 1/5th of the spaces have gone already!

As Andy says the venue is quite amazing, and this year we also have access to the Tower room.

Well its looking as if the Furnace is well and truly lit.

We've got about a quarter of the con already signed up, and the first of the games have been committed. Here's a summary of what's on offer.

  • Call of Cthulhu The Legacy of Deacon’s Wood. Gaslight.
  • Call of Cthulhu Slapton Sands Modern Day.
  • Savage Worlds Mission Arcturus set in the 2300AD sci-fi universe.
  • Mythic Russia Party like its 1381 ! run by the game’s author Mark Galeotti.
  • HeroQuest In search of the King set in First Age Middle Earth.
  • Monkey The Bag of Wind a new storytelling game based upon this much loved Chinese Classic.

  • Bullet Cop Against the Mob hardboiled 70s cop action.
  • RuneQuest She dreams of Empires set in Michael Moorcock’s Elric setting.
  • Full details on the web site

As well as providing games space for 70 attendees
we're also putting together a Games Designers Event, slotted over tea (some form of buffet is being organised), since even with out your esteemed attendance we've got the like so Mark Galeotti (HeroQuest/Mythic Russia/Unspoken Word/Cyberpunk2020/Dark Conspiracy), Loz Whitaker (Chaosium Eternal Champion, now Mongoose RQ), Dom Mooney (British Isles Traveller Society, author of Power Projection), Simon Bray (HeroQuest/Unspoken Word), not to mention leading members of the Gwenthia project (www.Gwenthia.org). This will be open to the whole convention, and be an opportunity to informally chat and network for both established and new designers/publishers.

I'll get off my ass and sort

    Andrew Kenrick's picture

I'll get off my ass and sort out our own schedule. I'm thinking scheduled indie games interspersed with 15 minute demos on demand. Sound good?

That does sound good but I

    Iain McAllister's picture

That does sound good but I was also thinking about Essen this year. I did promise myself I would get to the smaller cons this year though so that might be something. What about traders? Would we be the only ones there. I would also put my hand up for the game designers round table thingy, if I come.

    Cheers

    Andrew Kenrick's picture

The local store, Patriot Games, were there last year and had copies of Dead of Night on sale. I think we'd be the only ones selling copies of our games though, for the most part.

    I might go for this.

I might go for this. Sheffield's reasonably close for me - it's certainly an easier proposition than Gencon! Goodness knows what I'll be up to by October, mind you...
