Site News

Hi Guys,

thought I'd start a discussion on site development, and my blog seems as good a place as any to use.

First off, news.

I've opened up the site fully to search engines now, so don't post anything you don't want Google to stumble across :).

The software we use (Drupal for anybody who cares) has just moved onto a new version and I plan to update in the near future. I'll be testing to make sure it doesn't do odd things before I make the switch though, so it won't be right away.

I've also updated a few defaults. Now when you post a new topic in the forums it appears in the RSS feed (previously it as just blogs), useful if like me you keep track of sites that way.

Given I'm upgrading anyway, there are a few cosmetic things I might shift around for easier usage. However it'd be useful at this stage to know what you find useful, find irksome, and what you might like to see on the site so I can factor possible future developments in.

I have my own ideas based on looking at how the site is being used, versus how I envisioned it. But I'll leave those for later. For now, just post below with thoughts.

One thing that strikes me is

One thing that strikes me is that the forums are a little cramped, perhaps they could be extended out, width-wise? While I'm on the subject of the forums, the formatting functions could be made a little easier, if that is possible.

Two of the things I was considering!

There are some plugins to add useful formatting buttons which I'm going to experiment with. The one we seem to really need is easy quoting.

Width wise, yeah, I plan on sorting the layout some.

Drupal is a really cool CMS

Drupal is a really cool CMS that is ideally suited to Community building.

I nearly used it for the Masters of Luck and Death site (www.molad.org), but in the end settled for using CMS Made Simple (http://www.cmsmadesimple.org) for site management and Simple Machines Forum. SMF is the same forum software the Forge uses, since I was giving the HeroQuest board a new home and wanted the existing users to feel at home, plus SMF blows the rest of the opposition out of the water with its elegance and features.CMS Made Simple is another elegant solution which does what it says on the tin, and its easy to write your own plugins if you are familiar with php and the Smarty templating system.

However Drupal would have been my first choice if the scope of the site would allow people to discuss and post to Blogs/Project books/Forums with total freedom. However with HeroQuest & its setting Glorantha is subject to Intellectual Property restrictions, in the form of the Fan Material Policy so I can't just let people post willy nilly :(

I echo the sentiments about having the forum a bit wider, but otherwise I'm loving using such a colourful and feature rich site :)

Nicely done :D
