So my artist appears to have gone AWOL and with him the incidental art work that he has. Don't worry - no money has changed hands. I'm actually more concerned about his well-being than my book!
However, it does leave me at an impasse. I have about 8-10 pieces of character art in the book, but they have been confined to a NPC section at the moment. I'm not in the position to pay for art at the moment. I could pillage any high resolution public domain art I can find, but thats going to be scant.
The presentation of the game is quite graphic so far, but is it wholly a foul play to publish a game without any spot art?

ps. current preview layout, for an idea of how it looks at the moment is here - http://www.omnihedron.co.uk/dutyandhonour/preview.pdf

Dogs was published sans art inside. As long as you have a cover you are good to go.
I would recommend art, in general, as I feel it brings a lot to a book and the mood that people will play the game in.
But, if needs must, then *no art* is better than *bad art* is something to bear in mind.
Found him!

Just to note, my APB around Newcastle found him and he is fine (phew!). However, please feel free to continue the discussion regarding the necessity of art in rpgs!

The pages of the book look fantastic, by the way.
Text on that background reduces the need for a lot of art, to be honest.
Very nice illustrative art over at www.clipart.com

Do a search on 'napoleonic' and you'll find a ton of really nice black and white line drawings.

Newt, you win another pint at Furnace. Some of that stuff is perfect for what I have been looking for. And so cheap!

I'll second what Gregor said, a very very nice looking layout, and it certainly does minimize the need for lots of spot art.
Out of curiosity, what are you laying this out in?

Dogs isn't the only Indie book with little art. If I remember rightly, Zorceror of Zo only has incidental art too (and much of that was pretty bad and out of theme).
I do like to see a book with some art myself though, and the longer the book is the more art it could benefit from.

Someone else who is going to agree that the layout looks great.
And has been said previously, with the backgrounds, the need for spot art is greatly reduced.
When are we going to be able to get our hands on this puppy?

Wordplay

First version of Graham Spearing's Wordplay will be without artwork. I'm just working up my InDesign Fu at the moment (CS2, would have done CS3 but the Adobe Tax is too high at £500 for the UK upgrade vs $400 US).
May need to pick some brains re-Lulu etc...
Cheers,
Dom
