So, are we doing anything for UK GenCon? It's out of the way for many of us, and very close to GenCon US, but it seems a shame if we have no presence.

We considered attending, but once we weighed up cost, attendance and other practicalities (such as the fact that most of us are on our hols when it's on), we're not going to have an attendance this year. Maybe, if we (and they) get more organised, we'll be there next year.
Is there any group attending

Is there any group attending through which we might be able to sell games do you think? I know it's not the same as the full-on CE experience, with demos and sales from the game authors, but it would probably still help. We could send some CE posters and the like along with stock.

I think selling games on a stall when none of the CE are present is fairly unfeasible, especially when you consider that most of our sales follow demos or enthusiastic conversations with the various authors. Assuming Leisure Games are present, they'll have our various games on offer.
Actually...

...this would be a good time to ask who from the forums is actually going to be there.
(Not to do any selling of books, but just out of curiosity.)
I heard that Rich might be there. Malc will be out the country I think, I'll be busy with a prior committment that weekend, Graham will be in the US, etc.
The timing just doesn't work out unfortunately.

I believe Leisure Games aren't going to be at Gen Con UK this year. I'll double check with Angus when I next talk to him.

Ouch, I don't think it would be a great idea not to have our stuff on sale at all. I wish I could make it.

BITS are going to be there, but I'm not certain what the trading arrangements are. if you need someone to represent I could ask Andy for you?
I probably won't be there as Continuum is my choice for the month.

Well...

...not to put a damper on your enthusiasm, David, but....
GenCon UK is a commercial operation. It costs them a lot of money to put the convention on. So, they have to charge quite a bit of money for having a booth, and that's totally fine. However, the situation is that it's out of our price range given what we'd expect to make back in sales, and given the attendance of publisher members that we'd likely have in attendance.
While we'd love to run scheduled games as part of some sort of deal for selling our games there the sad reality is that almost none of us can make the con.
If you could make it to GenCon UK David that would be really cool. GenCon UK are always keen for people to run games, and if you could make it then I'd heartily endorse you going along and running games of Solipsist. The GenCon folks might come to arrangement with you to sell your books in return for running games.
We wouldn't want to load any one of us with being the only guy at the con selling or representing all our stuff. And I think it would be detrimental to have less than a proper booth presence if we are there officially, y'know?
Andy had a great time there a few years ago running Dead of Night and Sean is a great guy. So, if you could make it to the con for yourself that would be worth doing.
For me, and most of the other publishers, it's just not possible this year. We are looking forward to next year though, if we can get it worked out.

GenCon UK appeals less and less the more I hear about it.
I'm not currently intending to go, even as a punter. But if there's nothing else to do that weekend I might pop in for a day. Since the latest edition of D&D is actually pretty decent, I might even be able to find a game to play.
I get what you are saying
Submitted by David Donachie on Fri, 18/07/2008 - 09:46.
I get what you are saying Gregor. I've only been to UK GenCon a few times and it was years ago, so I have no up to date grasp of the commercial state there. I bow to your wisdom.
It would suck not to have our stuff available at retail though. I was thinking more if there was a trader already going, on whom we were on good terms, that we could maybe send them some of our products on a "if it doesn't sell send it back and we will pay for that" basis. Of course that would require them to have the space for some more stuff, no small order in the first place! :)

Play, play, play

GenCon had some rocky years since you were last there David, but they are building it back up. Which is great.
Depending on the timing next year I might be at a wedding in Seattle though (next year is really bad for overseas weddings for me...), but if I'm in the country I'd like to go there. Even if it's just to play.
If anyone does go along I'd love to hear a report of how it goes.

I'm going on the Saturday, have a commitment to run a Traveller game in order to give the BITS guys who are there for the whole thing a break.
Will happily report back, though not expecting much based on the number of people who I know are not going.
