The Best Time to be Indie

Destriarch's picture

I was just scrolling through the selection of new releases over at Leisure Games, and it struck me just how much Indie material was there in the list, and how fresh and enticing it looked alongside the same-old-same-old stuff being put out by the mainstream publishers, and the thought struck me: has there ever been a better time to release Indie games? Though it's unlikely that there'll ever be a big market for them, it does seem that public awareness is on the rise. Has anyone else noticed this? Am I just biased because I'm a fan of the Indie scene? Think it has anything to do with the dearth of mainstream products preceding the release of 4th edition D20? Are we actually looking at increased sales of Indie products or are they just more visible on the shelves? Any other insights anyone wants to add to that?

Well, what that list reflects...

...is that Angus &co like to have the "indie" stuff. As well as personal interest it makes sense in terms of the mail order service, so they can sell to folks who've heard of these strange and obscure produvts.

Leisure Games aren't the only ones though...

...there's also been an upsurge at my local gaming store, and a couple of others that I've dropped by on an impulse. Obviously I can't net the whole of the UK, but I wondered if it's a developing trend everywhere?

Wayland's Forge stock a lot

Wayland's Forge stock a lot of indie games because we sold them a lot last Games Expo! Whenever we attend a convention we attempt to make contact with the local gaming stores and introduce them to ourselves, a policy we've had great success with so far.

Wayland's Forge have been stocking Indie games on-and-off since before the Shadow of Yesterday was released. It's my local store. They tend to stock any titles that look good, at least in small numbers. They've always been good for variety. With them I think it's more a case of perceived quality than designer recognition. Anyway they regularly stock one or two Indie products that are new out, too. It's not just CE stuff in there.

Just because we know *why*

Just because we know *why* some retailer stocks Indie games doesn't change the fact that tehy are stocking Indie games :)

...I'll be interested to see what shops are there as traders and which ones stock (any) indie games. I think it's a great time to be indie, to be honest.
