I'd love to make the next Nerdinburgh a bigger one - that means not in my house. Looking at Camp Nerdly Beachparty this seems like a great way to do it cheaply.
So, a Friday evening to Sunday afternoon on a campsite or holiday park somewhere near Edinburgh. In tents, caravans, chalets or whatever, a whole weekend of gaming. Collaborative cooking and sharing etc. What do you think?
Would any of you southeners join us?
Any ideas of location?
What about price?
I was thinking August or September.

Interested

Interested, and thinking of caravan parks or chalets on the coastal road out to, or at, North Berwick. Easy to get to by bus and car from Edinburgh (26 bus route?). Musselburgh, Seton Sands?

I'd definitely be interested, as Nerdinburgh was excellent.
August or September would be fine. I've no specific plans yet.
I guess chalets would make most sense. I'd love to cook, too.
Like this one?

Drum Mohr Caravan site - they have tent spaces and luxury lodges, something for every taste - and price:

So they're all 90-100 quid for the weekend, each for Fri-Mon. A little cheaper during September.
What game do we play in a hot tub?

That's for lodges, which we would need a couple of to play in I suppose, depending on the weather and numbers. Tents are £15 per pitch plus a bit extra per person. Maybe we can get a discount on lodges?
September is fine by me.

Sounds like a fantastic idea. Sadly, August and Sept are off the cards for me. July would be fine, but I have a feeling that'll be busy/expensive/inconvenient.
However, I think this kind of personal mini-con is the way that gaming gathering are heading. Big cons, while valuable in their own way, might not be the way things are done forever. So, kudos for getting something like this off the ground.

We (being the Newcastle posse) have done a couple of these over the last year. They're a lot of fun and offer a very focused gaming/social environment unlike anything I have experienced before.
We lean towards the creature comforts so we have chosen to use holiday cottages at the beginning or end of season, when they are cheaper. It usually works out around £30 a head for the weekend, plus petrol and food. We've found that on the first one it is essential that everyone knows their role. Someone has to have the responsibility for bringing toilet roll and washing up liquid and such, over the 'glamour' assignments of food and beers.
We've also discovered that virtually every holiday organisation seems to baulk at the idea of an all-male group in their property. We got around it by being very blunt about what we were doing with a little swerve. We are games designers who need somewhere quiet to work for the weekend. In a situation where orgies, stag nights, swinging parties etc. were possible reasons for 'the fear' I couldn't really be bothered to explain what roleplaying games are!
Another thing I'd suggest is to be flexible about your games and timetable. Games inevitably over-run or start late and after a load of travelling, gaming and what-not, sometimes energy levels need a couple of hours to recharge.
They are fantastic events and the centrepiece of our gaming calendar.

Thanks, guys.
Maybe there's good sense in choosing the cheapest time of the year - looking at Drum Mohr's prices, the price for a 2 bedroom lodge drops to only £182 in November and £210 for a 3 bedroom one.
And then Malcolm could be convinced to a come along perhaps? :D
I might go visit the campsite on my own over a weekend to check it out.
I agree re: the schedule and organisation, Neil. Things should be flexible and relaxed during the event, but tight beforehand to make sure we're not missing out on vitals.
So, people from Newcastle, London, York, Dublin or anywhere else, would you attend a Camp Nerdinburgh over a weekend? In September 2008? In November?

I drive up to Scotland a few times every year to visit family, and combining one of these trips with Nerdinburgh seems like a damned good idea.

Then they were five. Nice. Did you notice that the campsite is very close to Tantallon Castle? Exiting.
Looking at the (insane) prices for lodges, I'm inclined to suggest either a tent only meetup in August/September or head for November.

Hi all,
What's the format for the weekend? Is it purely roleplaying (not that that's a bad thing), or does it also look at game design? Sorry, I've just not been involved in the previous forays.

In my head it's primarily for playing, which of course could be playtesting too, but no formalised sessions on "how to design games" or whatever.
Of course, actually playing a design is a very solid way of learning what it does and doesn't :)
I certainly hope to have a playtestable version of my JFK/Sorcerer convention scenario when time comes

Thanks Per,
