I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper

Malcolm Craig's picture

I was thinking about an engagement present for my good friend Morgan Davie. That's how this all got started.

Actually, no, that's not how this all got started. How it got started was the fact that I introduced Morgue to that much-maligned classic of the space disco movement, I Lost My Heart To A Starship Trooper by Sarah Brightman & Hot Gossip. Yes, that Sarah Brightman.

That leads to the attached file, a four page game entitled...well, I think you've guessed the title by now. I'm not sure if it works. It owes a lot to Best Friends and My Life With Master. Maybe it functions in play, maybe it doesn't. Maybe someone might tell me?

Fucking hell. Well, this

I'm not sure it's quite ready for that! A few errors have been pointed out by others, like not referencing exactly how Devoid of Emotion gets used. But do feel free to have a go. I can just see you, Per and Gregor giving it a whirl!

I'm sure there is a game in there somewhere, it might need tweaking and stuff to make it fully functional.

Sorry Neil.

Now that's one I never actually read. I feel I must now check it out.

Wow

In an amazing turn of events, I've actually constructive design feedback on this. And for a somewhat frivolous game that was a gift to a friend, that's quite something. So I've updated the link to include the v1.1 version of the game. Who would have thunk it?

Goodness. ILMH2AST makes it to v1.1 - I am stunned and delighted.

It gives me galactic thrills.

I think the Sarahs should be distinguished by adjectives. Blonde Sarah. Catsuit Sarah. Big Hair Sarah.

If you'd like genuine feedback...the game feels rather regimented, especially the conflicts. It looks at the moment as though the game is:

1. Each player frames their bit of situation, in turn.
2. Each player narrates their bit of the conflict, in turn.
3. Roll to resolve.
4. Narrate the outcome.
5. And repeat.

Games like My Life With Master and Contenders have a period of free play in between, where you play the scene and the conflict arises from that scene. More like...

1. Each player frames their bit of situation, in turn.
2. The players play through the scene until they reach a conflict.
3. Roll to resolve.
4. Narrate the outcome.
5. And repeat.

I'd prefer it more like the second. Unless, of course, I've misinterpreted the whole thing and it actually is like the second.

More generally, I'd love a roleplaying game about 70s glam space stuff.

You asked for it, Capt Craig...

Wow!

Graham: That seems like a pretty solid interpretation of how it goes and I do like the suggestion regarding how it possibly should go. I'll endeavour to get some fixes worked out and maybe even playtest it at some point in the near future!

Holy crap! That's amazing!

What can I say but thank you.

I think there's some mileage in this: not just a novelty game. You might need to expand it beyond the song itself, of course.

But the idea of a 1970s glam space-rock game is irresistible. And, well, I think it'd sell. It hasn't been done.

Graham

P.S. Thanks to you, I am singing this song and segueing into "One Night In Bangkok".

Domo Arigato, Mr Roboto!

The novelty value is a big appeal to me, but I can see what you mean. However, expanding it away from the source material would be hard, as that was what inspired it and it would take it away from the intial concept I had when I wrote it for Morgue.

So, despite the obvious value that a more expansive game might have, I'd find it personally challenging to do that.

That being said, it's not beyond the realms of possibility to stay tied to the source material and basic concept, yet make it something larger. Musing must be done!
