[Conpulsion] Could we sponsor the 24 minute game competition?

Graham W's picture

Hey! Gregor! Can we do this? Big banner in the room. Flier given to every participant. "Collective Endeavour" mentioned in the blurb. That sort of thing.

I think this competition is exactly what we should be about. Also, I note Solipsist came out of it.

(Note: it was Neil's idea).

Yes it did indeed, no other

David Donachie's picture

Yes it did indeed, no other published games that I know of, though there was supposed to be a collected PDF of all the entries from a couple of years back.

Collected PDF

I definately think that this is a number we ought to be striving to increase. I can't be at the event, but I'd be happy to help organise a second collected PDF venture from the competition, if the whole concept goes ahead and the organisers want to use that format again. Whether this happens or not though, I'm definately strongly for mooting the idea of us sponsoring the event. Hope it doesn't turn out to be too pricey.

24 minutes of pain

Last year's winner should get a giant hat.

24 minute games are a bit of a larf, I don't think we should take em too seriously.

Yes

I spoke with Jo and John last night and they were all for the idea, I guess I can sort out getting the logo on the website and the convention programme.

£25 seemed a fair price (John thinks it will go towards prizes for the winners).

Oh, Joe, I thought your winning idea was quite good. In 24 minutes no one is ever going to write a complete game (the same is true of 24-hour competitions too) but you can get the kernel of one that can be developed.

The winner the first year was Phil Masters and Joe won the second year. Will the trend of published UK luminaries continue?

Sounds Good

I should say so, I was expecting four times that amount. It's almost tempting to try and arrange some CE writing paper and pens for the contestants to use ^_^ but maybe that's a bit silly. I reckon it'd be a good idea to send a representative to the competition itself, maybe see if we can scrounge a minute or so before the competition starts for a very brief speech to really push home the message that the CE is here to help potential designers get started.

Actually, since it's only £25 for the sponsorship, maybe we could put forward a CE-funded prize of some sort? I'm a little stuck as to what it should be right now, though.

Joe, there are an awful lot

David Donachie's picture

Joe, there are an awful lot of 24 hour RPGs available online, some of which are taken quite seriously. Now obviously 24 minute games are less finished, but if you don't count the layout and writing up and producing a web page / PDF as part of the time then I don't see why they couldn't get to much the same standard.

I'd personally love to see a PDF of the entries from past years, I am sure John has all the originals

OK, so, 25 quid

Graham W's picture

So, of the people chipping in for the stall, do you think this is a good idea or not? Should we pay an extra three or four quid, each, to sponsor the 24-minute game competition?

Pros:

Name recognition
That vague sense of "this is the sort of thing we ought to support"

Cons:

It's 25 quid for an intangible benefit.

If you just want to chat generally about this, please, please, start another thread. Let's keep this focussed on people who are paying for the stall: who wants to pay extra for this and who doesn't?

(I mean, don't get me wrong, do discuss benefits, just keep it focussed. Would be how I would like this thread to be.)

Yes!

Yes

For all the reasons I laid out in my muse about balancing sales and design and the future renewal of the group - yes.

It looks like the total stall spend will come in at around £10pp. For me thats spending forward because:

(a) I sure as damned well want D&H to fly high under the CE banner later in the year and it pays for the group to have the strongest identity it can, so that I can recoup my investment as soon as possible.

(b) I've had a very positive experience designing within this group and if I am to continue with these endeavours, then I will want to see that experience continue.

£10 isn't that much to spend to buy-in to that experience.

Precisely

I totally agree with Gregor here and would say that this is exactly the kind of small, local games design event that we should be involved in and attaching our name to. It's a demonstration that we are keen to foster design and play at all levels, from those wishing to publish in shiny book form, to getting a game done in 24 minutes.

I'd also like to add that I'd happily donate a bundle of Cold City and the Companion as a prize for this.

Cheers

Well, I guess I might as well officially say 'Yes' but I think you've guessed that by now :)

What you mean like Piledrivers & Powerbombs, Contenders and The Dragon vs The Gun? ;)

I'm perfectly happy to chip in as a CE booth member and reigning champion!

I'd like to run a game of Señor Phantasmagoria as part of the competition too.

Gregor do you have the 24 minute RPG entries?

Donating prizes

Graham W's picture

What a superb idea. I'll donate a copy of Play Unsafe.

Would anyone else like to donate a prize?

Gregor, with the prizes, could we have them displayed in the room and, perhaps, each mentioned by name somewhere? That way, we get a bit of name recognition for the things we've donated.

Graham

Prizes .... nice :) Assuming

Prizes .... nice :) Assuming the copies of Solipsist arrive in time (and I hope to god they do) then I'd be mad not to donate one!
