Paul recently got in touch to ask if I had a tagline for Hot War. Which made me think: No, I don't have one. Rattling my brain around, I've been struggling to come up with it. Cold City was pretty easy:
"Hidden agendas, trust and monster hunting in 1950 Berlin"
Simple, says exactly what the game is about.
So what is Hot War about?
Factionalism, trust, rebuilding, fear, xenophobia, monsters, cruelty, friendship, agendas and so on. Distilling this down isn't as easy as I imagined, as the game is, in many ways, a lot more broad than CC. My first thought was this:
"Factions. Trust. Friendship. London isn't swinging any more."
It tells you some of what the game is about (the first three words), but the end of the tagline is rubbish. What if the idea of 'Swinging London' creates no resonance at all? So, I toyed with this:
"Factions. Trust. Friendship.
London, 1963.
Welcome to Hell."
But again, while it gets across much of what the game is about, it's bitty and doesn't read very well. Rather shamefacedly given my marketing background, I'm somewhat stuck on this one. Suggestions on a postcard please.
Cheers

I like the idea of putting 'survival' in there somewhere. Like, "Surviving in post-apocalyptic London"

"Living amongst the fallout" strikes a chord with me, but I also need to integrate something more descriptive, giving an idea of what the game is about. The survival stuff is good as well. Not so sure about rat stew! Heh.
So:

I feel your pain. For some reason having the 'M' word in my job title makes people think that I am a 24/7 creative dynamo that should be able to produce 'stuff' from concept to product in about oh, the time it takes to down a pint. The number of times I hear people say 'But, you work in Marketing? Surely ....' before some incredulous shock that I cannot instantly 'produce' stuff. Gah! What makes it worse still is that I'm a 'marketeer' (god, I hate that word) with pretty ingrained left-wing leanings which causes all manner of conflict!
It'll come.

My first go is "Trust and survival in the wreckage of London."
I think the historic angle is crucial, though. swinging London is the right general idea but it's the wrong reference - London never gets to swing in the hot war setting.

For some reason I've now got 'Streets of London' stuck in my head, particularly the line "Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London" I think the phrase 'Streets of London' has a strong emotional impact, mostly due to that song. Maybe it could be used to your advantage? Sorry, I've never been very good at tag lines.

Streets of London does have a nice set of connotations.
"Trust and survival in the ruined streets of 60s London" might work, though is lengthy.

Could there be some tie in or reference to the Great Fire (1666) as its in keeping with the 60's theme.
"This time the fire won" type stuff.
If you've got friends and traitors, something about Burning Bridges (within relationships and the physical ones)? "The only bridges left standing in London are those you're going to burn..."?
With the fear/xenophobia aspect you could probably get some good mileage from checking out old propaganda or looking for an Orwellian quote.
There's probably something of the phoenix aspect to the feel too? Rising a new world from the ashes, cast in your own image?

Though of course we all consider the 1960's to be the "Swinging Sixties" the game is set in 1962-63 UK, which is VERY different than the later sexual revolution charged 1966 onwards. Lets just say the swing wasn't quite there yet.. at all infact.
Swinging Sixties means to most people Beatles, free love etc. I think you run the risk of disallusioning people with a tagline with Swinging in it into thinking it's going to be a very different game setting. Unlike the Cold City tagline which tells you everything and is quite accurate. 1962 Britain has more in common with the post war 1950's than it does with the later "swinging" sixties.

You could go with many lines from the Clash's London Calling but I'm thinking of something a bit like the intro to Fallout:
Radio noise, a touch of morse code and an RP voice, "This is London calling... Please answer"
That doesn't really work for text though.
In '62, the door into horror was opened in Cuba.
In '63, in all that is left of London, you decide who lives and dies.

I mean the War is over, London isn't hot, in either temperature or fallout. I know it's a play on Cold City, but maybe a different title would have an easier tag line?

Title: Rationale
Submitted by Malcolm Craig on Sat, 26/01/2008 - 22:44.

Hi David,
The name is more of a play on 'Cold War' than 'Cold City' (which is in itself a play on 'Cold War'). There have been a lot of references to the Cold war 'going hot', i.e.: kicking off the nukes. Which is why I chose 'Hot War' as the title. The Cold War has gone hot (in the sense of becoming an actual war, in the sense of nukes, in the sense of the heat of battle, etc) within the setting, even though the event itself is in the past. There's also a certain amount of irony inherent in the title: it is by default set in a wintry, cold London, where low-level conflict continues as people try to rebuild. So, the idea of it being a 'hot war' is both ironic and horrific.
To summarise, the title refers to the 'hot war' that caused the current situation and it is also an ironic reference to the situation in the present of the game.
That, at least, is my reasoning for the name.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions about taglines and so forth. I'm mulling it over at the moment and doubtless something will emerge from the simmering brain stew.
Cheers

Thanks Malcolm, it does make sense, but I find it interesting that you are naming the game after events that are now over in game terms, rather than what is currently going on.
is that because you see the game as being all about the consequences of that event and how the characters deal with it in the aftermath?

Indeed, that covers a big chunk of it. People are living within the consequences, rather than taking part in the events that caused the situation. If that makes any sense at all.
