[Solipsist] Very first version

David Donachie's picture

Not sure if this is the ideal forum for this, but I couldn't think of a better place.

I thought some of you might be interested, I've found and scanned the very first version of Solipsist, the 24 minute RPG contest entry from Conpulsion.

You can find it here

I envy you your handwriting

Wish I could write that neatly.

Anyway, this is probably not going to be a popular suggestion, but I couldn't help thinking how atmospheric the handwritten look of the original is. Have you thought of handwriting the whole book, having first transcribed it in a word processor for speed and ease of editing? It'd be a little trickier to lay out and insert artwork afterwards, plus of course there'd be an inevitable hit on file size, but I think it'd really give it a sense of individuality and atmosphere.

Mind you, I wouldn't use lined paper in that circumstance, I'd use plain paper and transfer the text onto a nice textured backdrop.

...we're putting this in the finished book aren't we. I think it's great to see the original document (time stamp and all) and see how that has evolved.

It's interesting to see the origins of this stuff. I like a lot of "inside the designers head" stuff. But that's because I'm weird.

In the book?

David Donachie's picture

Are we? Well we certainly can if you think there is room.

What am I saying, it's my printing costs, of course *you* think there is room Gregor :P

If we can cram it in after the example characters, character sheet, and, of course, index, then sure :)

I'd put a note in the

I'd put a note in the author's note that the original was on the website, as an extra plug to get people to go and look. Quick poll, who here would like it in the book and who would prefer it on the website?

Both!

Any specific reason why you can't do both?

You know I *knew* I should

David Donachie's picture

You know I *knew* I should have put that as an option :)

Obviously that should be

(a) Original version in the book (and on website)

(b) Original version on website (and mentioned in book)

(a)

I like (a), but if there are space or resolution reasons then I'm cool with (b).

(b) for me

It's a nice download, but would be slightly odd in the book. For me.

I would say 'A', I think

Malcolm Craig's picture

I would say 'A', I think it's a great idea if space allows it. It would be fascinating, as a reader, to see the evolution from the very first incarnation of the game to the published product. And it also shows that the original really was done in a mere 24 minutes.
